Bandcamp’s mission is to create the best possible service for artists & labels to share & earn money from their music, & for fans to discover & enjoy it. We believe that music is an indispensable part of culture, & for that culture to thrive, artists—no matter the size of their audience—must be compensated fairly & transparently for their work. Without this belief, our mission would be meaningless, & it’s why we’ve built our business around a model that puts the artist first.
Astral Harmonization music (CC BY-SA 4.0) was created using IBM Watson Beat, a machine deep learning algorithm that learns & creates music by teaching a complex neural network to understand music theory, structure (pitch, time signature, key signature), & emotional intent. Inspired by Gustav Holst’s The Planets, a seven-movement orchestral suite named after a planet of the Solar System & its corresponding astrological influence on the psyche.
Planets in astrology have a meaning different from the modern astronomical understanding of celestial bodies & provide insight into human affairs & terrestrial events as signs of divine communication. Before the age of telescopes, to the earliest astronomers, this group consisted of the five planets visible to the naked eye, & excluded Earth. The term was then enlarged, to include the Sun & the Moon, referred to as "the lights" or the "luminaries", making a total of seven planets. The celestial bodies represent the will of the gods & their direct energetic influence upon human affairs & represent basic drives or urges in the unconscious, representing dimensions of experience. Holst’s suite omitted the luminaries & included Neptune & Uranus instead. However, for this rendition, those planets have been translated back into the characteristics of the Sun & the Moon to preserve the classification from ancient times.
