NASA Crawler Transporter
NASA Crawler Transporter
The NASA crawler-transporter, a pivotal element of the Apollo program, played a vital role in moving the Saturn V moon rocket from the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to the launch pad. These colossal tracked vehicles, weighing around 6 million pounds and measuring over 130 feet in length, were custom-built for this monumental task.
To transport the Saturn V, the crawler-transporters would delicately hoist the massive rocket onto a mobile launch platform inside the VAB. Once securely positioned, they would embark on the slow journey, moving at about 1 mile per hour, along specially designed roads to reach the launch pad. These remarkable machines not only facilitated the Apollo program but also supported later missions, including the Space Shuttle program.
